Which SOP Should You Film First?

The best first video is the procedure that is explained most often and is hardest to get right from text alone. Use this checklist to choose it.

Six questions to ask of each candidate

Go through your list of procedures and note how many of these apply to each. The one with the most is usually the right first video.

  • Do supervisors or trainers explain it again and again?
  • Is it performed, or refreshed, frequently?
  • Is it physical or visual, hard to follow from text alone?
  • Do the steps vary between shifts, sites or departments?
  • Does it include a safety or quality checkpoint that matters?
  • Do new or casual staff regularly need it?

Then check two things

A procedure that scores well still needs to pass these.

  • It is approved and current. A video should show the procedure as it is meant to be done. If the written SOP is out of date, update it first.
  • It is reasonably stable. If it is about to change, wait. The cost of a video is shared across its viewings, so it pays to film something that will stay accurate.

Common first choices

Equipment pre-start checks, hygiene entry, machine start-up and shut-down, and site inductions are common because they are repeated, physical and important. Industry pages list more examples: manufacturing, food production, warehousing, construction and agriculture.

If you are choosing between a single procedure and a whole induction, remember the pricing difference: the SOP Video Starter covers one procedure, while inductions are priced from $3,900 + GST and quoted to scope.
